One of the most innovative ideas for workplaces is the use of a sit stand workstation. This is basically a desk which can be raised or lowered according to the user’s personal preferences. This way, you can adjust it to whatever setting is most comfortable for you. Not to mention that doing so also helps with your posture and helps keep spinal injuries like lower back pain and neck pain at bay.
Although it may seem pretty simple to use, where many people go wrong is in finding the correct setting. Don’t worry though because it’s not entirely that difficult since you only need to keep the following concepts in mind.
First, when working on a seated position, you’ll need to adjust the workstation in such a way that it follows the standard healthy working posture for computer users. For one, you’ll need to adjust the desk’s height so your hands, wrists, and forearms are parallel to the floor.
Second, the desk height should allow your head to be slightly bent forward to your computer screen. Your monitor should be at eye level or just slightly lower. Don’t over lean forward – you’ll want your head to be in-line with your torso and resting comfortably on your neck.
When it comes to working in a standing position, the desk’s height should be approximately at your elbow’s level. This will help to ensure that your hands, wrists and forearms remain parallel to the floor while working. As for the monitor it should be at eye level or only slightly lower. This position helps to ensure that your spine is erect and that there is no strain at your lower back.
When working in a standing position, you may feel that your legs are getting sore and exhausted. What you can do here is to use a supportive footwear or put a silicone insole inside your shoes. You can also use an inti-fatigue mat which helps to absorb and relieve weight from your legs. Or you could simply adjust your desk and go back to a sitting position.
The sit stand workstation is generally used to help employees alternate between period of sitting and standing while working. This is good for the employee since sitting for extended periods of time is generally unhealthy.
